Day 1 - We Buy the iPads for School

By September 2012, two of my children will be attending Immaculate High School in Danbury, CT.  As part of a pilot program for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bridgeport, the school is going to start using Apple iPads for the 2012-13 school year on a limited basis (mix of traditional / online textbooks).  The plan is go to fully digital textbooks for the 2013-14 school year.

Our family is no stranger to iPads.  One of my children purchased an iPad within the first 10 minutes they were sold in the U.S. in April 2010.  I have an iPad 2 that I bought last year.  The Immaculate students, however, do not own one, so this will be new for them.

What I want to do here is to journal my own perceptions as to how this experiment is working out, both for my kids and for the school.  I am curious as to how the kids will interact with them.  I find it easy to read leisure books on the iPad.  I'm a bit more skeptical about interacting with material from which you actually have to learn something.  I can see pluses and minuses. I am also VERY curious as to whether this will reduce the cost of textbooks, which has been running me about $600 annually, just for 1 student.  I certainly hope so!

We placed the order for the new iPads this morning.  Should be getting them in about the time school is over for the summer, around June 15.  I'll post again after we get them and then, much more so, in the Fall when the students start using them for school work.
